Our Story

The harbour where every Dubrovnik day on the water begins.

We're Luka Vlahović and Ivan Kovač — two Dubrovnik-born skippers who started Rent Boat Dubrovnik in 2008 with a single Pasara, a marina kiosk and the conviction that the OTAs were taking too much of your money for boats they never saw.

18 seasons later, we own and operate eight boats out of Marina Frapa Dubrovnik, we run our own private and group boat tours to the Elaphiti, Lokrum, the Blue Cave, Mljet, Hvar and Korčula, and we still answer WhatsApp at 7am the morning of your trip. Every euro you save by booking direct goes back into fuel, fresh coolers, and the boats themselves.

  • Croatian Maritime Authority licensed (Cat. C)
  • All eight boats inspected annually
  • 20% cheaper than the same boat on Viator
  • Direct phone line to your captain

Booked the Quicksilver 805 with skipper Marin for our anniversary. Sunset over Lokrum, bottle of Pošip, the city walls glowing — exactly the magazine moment Rent Boat Dubrovnik promised. Marina pickup was effortless.

Self-drove the Barracuda 530 RIB to Sunj Beach with my wife. Briefing was thorough, fuel topped up, life jackets clean. Saved €120 vs Viator — Rent Boat Dubrovnik handled the booking with one WhatsApp message.

Mljet day with the Quicksilver 755 was a highlight of our 10-day trip. Skipper knew every cove. Lost a star because we ran late on the way back, but Rent Boat Dubrovnik refunded our taxi to compensate.

No-licence Pasara was the perfect Lokrum boat for two. €150 for half a day, gas included, brief but clear safety walk-through. Rent Boat Dubrovnik replied to my email at 7am — that's the kind of operator I trust.

Group sunset tour for €30 was the cheapest banger of our trip. 10 people on the boat, welcome drink poured before we cleared the marina, perfect light by the time we hit Lovrijenac. Booked direct via Rent Boat Dubrovnik to avoid OTA fees.

Did the full Elaphiti private with skipper. Sunj Beach was empty when we arrived at 9:30 — Rent Boat Dubrovnik clearly times these things to dodge cruise crowds. Lunch on Šipan was unforgettable.

We had three generations on board — grandmother, parents, two kids. The Jeanneau 6.5 with skipper was perfect: stable, shaded, the captain spoke enough English for grandma. Rent Boat Dubrovnik even arranged a booster seat for our 4-year-old.

Sunset private cruise — €200, two hours, the famous walls in golden hour. Almost perfect. Bottle of Pošip was warm when it arrived (we asked for it cold). Otherwise Rent Boat Dubrovnik did everything right.

Frequently Asked

Six questions every guest asks before they book.

Do I need a boating licence to rent a boat in Dubrovnik?
For our smallest boat, the Pasara 5 HP, no licence is required — Croatian law permits anyone to operate boats under 5 metres with engines up to 5 kW. For larger self-drive boats like the Barracuda 530 RIB, we accept your home country's recreational boating certificate, an International Certificate of Competence (ICC), or in some cases a video boat-handling test we run before departure. If you don't have any of those, every boat in our fleet is also available with a Croatian Maritime Authority-licensed skipper from €250 per day, and the skipper takes the boat anywhere you want. Rent Boat Dubrovnik's briefing covers Croatian sea rules, marker buoys, no-wake zones around the Old Town, and how to call us by VHF if anything goes wrong.
Where do we collect the boat?
All boats depart from Marina Frapa Dubrovnik, a 12-minute taxi ride from the Old Town (€10–15) or a 25-minute walk along the seafront. The marina has free public parking, a fuel dock, a cafe-bar, clean showers, and lockers for valuables. We meet you at the Rent Boat Dubrovnik office on the marina pier 30 minutes before your departure slot. From the marina you reach Lokrum in 10 minutes, the Elaphiti islands in 25 minutes, and the famous Old Town walls coastline in under five. If you're staying in Cavtat or anywhere south of Dubrovnik, ask us about the Cavtat-marina pickup option — there's a €40 surcharge but it saves you the cross-town drive.
What's included in the price?
Every Rent Boat Dubrovnik rental includes: a full tank of fuel (we top up at the end and refund any unused portion at €1.95/litre), CE-approved adult and child life jackets, a 30-minute on-water safety briefing, anchor and rope, a bimini sun-shade, and Croatian third-party liability insurance with €750 deductible. Skippered boats also include a Croatian Maritime Authority-licensed captain, a cooler box stocked with ice, and bottled drinking water. Add-ons we don't auto-charge but most guests order: snorkelling masks (€10/set), inflatable SUP (€40/day), Bluetooth speaker (free on flagship boats), professional photographer (€180 for the day). We never charge a cleaning fee unless you bring sand on board — and even then it's usually waived.
How does cancellation work?
Rent Boat Dubrovnik offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before your departure — full refund, no questions, no fees. If the Croatian Hydrographic Institute issues a Bora wind warning above 25 knots or sea-state above 1.5 metres, we cancel proactively and refund 100% — even inside the 24-hour window. If you cancel inside 24 hours for any other reason we charge 50% of the rental, but we'll usually rebook you free into the next available slot if the weather is the issue. We don't use the predatory "non-refundable rate for €5 less" trick that platforms push. One rate, one cancellation policy, no fine print. Rebookings inside the season are always free as long as the weather is safe.
Can I really save money by booking direct vs Viator or GetYourGuide?
Yes — usually 15–20%. Viator and GetYourGuide charge tour operators a 25–30% commission, and that fee gets passed through to you in the listed price. Booking direct on Rent Boat Dubrovnik means we keep our margin where it should be (paying our skippers, maintaining our boats) and you keep the saving. A €280 private Blue Cave tour on our site is the same boat, same skipper, same fuel, same coolers as the €340 listing on Viator. We also throw in things the platforms can't: WhatsApp confirmations, last-minute weather rebooking, free pickup chat with the captain the night before, and a bottle of Pošip on long charters.
How experienced are your skippers?
Every Rent Boat Dubrovnik skipper holds a Croatian Maritime Authority Category C boating licence, sea-rescue certification, and at least five seasons of Adriatic charter experience. Our lead captain, Marin Radović, has been navigating these waters for 15 years and operates as our daytime base operator at Marina Frapa. Most of our skippers grew up sailing the Elaphiti and know the cove our guests will love better than the cove the guidebook recommends. They speak fluent English, conversational Italian or German, and they will absolutely take you to a beach the cruise ships can't reach. We've had zero serious incidents since 2008 — 17 seasons running.
